Working out where a landmark is

ICompass can help you to gauge the size of a landmark this could be important if you are lost or need to know how wide a mountain is which can be key to deciding whether an excursion is possible with your current resources, food and water supply. To do this perform the following:

Step 1
Press the Start menu item in the menu bar.

Step 2
Hold the smart device flat and turn to face the landmark

Step 3
Either rotate the compass face so that the point marked as N or North is covered by the needle end that is pointing to magnetic North or select the Orientate Compass menu item from the menu to have this process done for you.

Step 4
Read the cardinal direction that is shown by the compass face pointing to the top centre of the screen or you can look at the text marked Facing if you have enabled it within the application’s settings to see a more accurate description of which way you are looking. If you repeat the process with more landmarks and relay the bearing information you can greatly increase the speed of someone trying to rescue you! This is known as determining the bearing to a landmark or taking a bearing to a landmark.

Do note that this is identical in principle to working out which cardinal direction you are facing.
