Calibrating ICompass

It is possible that sometimes the smart devices compass sensors can act erratically or can deliver incorrect results in such a case it is necessary to calibrate the sensors by performing following the instructions shown.

Controls

  1. Continue menu bar item – Begins the calibration operation with the desired option.
  2. Toggle Compass View menu item – Displays/Hides the compass. The compass being displayed will not have any declination settings or offsets applied this is so that you can gauge the accuracy of the compass before beginning the calibration process.
  3. Demonstration of how you should move the smart device when you begin the calibration operation.
  4. Calibration methods A, B and C represent operations that the smart device will perform when the operation starts. In most cases calibration A should be fine for most devices but as expressed in the activity if this does not improve the result try calibration B or C. Screenshot showing the calibration activity before it has finished executing with menu expanded with numeric annotations attached to each menu item.

The following is only visible after the calibration operation has finished.

  5. Try again menu bar item – Re-attempts the calibration operation with the desired option.
  6. Finish menu bar item – Exits the calibration activity.
  7. Show calibration demo menu item – Renders the calibration demonstration animation to view for your reference. Screenshot showing the calibration activity after it has finished executing with the menu expanded with numeric annotations attached to each menu item.

To calibrate

  1. Disconnect any power cables or sync cables from the smart device and give yourself some space.
  2. Take a mental note of the animation being presented as you will need to move the smart device in this pattern when you press (1). To elaborate, you will need to hold the smart device firmly in your grasp and trace an infinity sign or horizontal number 8 with it making sure to angle the top edge of the device in the direction your moving. This doesn’t have to be perfect and it doesn’t have to be at the exact same speed as the animation shows but you will have to do this for 30 seconds.
  3. When you feel you understand what to do and you have chosen an option press (1) to begin and perform the motions for 30 seconds. If you're device can vibrate then you will feel a pulse when the time has finished. Screenshot showing the calibration operation in full effect.
  4. Check the compass using the (2). If the sensor readings are still off you can always try a different option and try again. If you are still having issues then please ensure that you have not connected any sync cables or charging cables and that you are not near any other magnetic fields. If the problem only occurs outside of the calibration activity then you may of set a declination value or offset by mistake in which case set the aforementioned values to 0 and see if the result improves. If the problem still does not improve you may need to restart your phone.
